Spiritually Hangry

by Greg Laurie on Mar 13, 2021
When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.
—Jeremiah 15:16
Listen

There’s a cat in our neighborhood named Hopkins who goes from house to house, and everyone feeds him. The other morning, I got up to find that Hopkins was walking around in our house.

So my wife, Cathe, asked me to give him some milk, so I poured some into a little bowl and set it down in front of Hopkins. He took about two licks and then wandered away, probably to get food from some other neighbors.

I thought, “Wait! I just poured all that milk in a bowl for you!”

Some of us approach God’s Word in the same way. We take in a little bit and think we’re good. Then off we go.

But hold on. Dig in deeper. Continue in the Word of God.

When I don’t eat, I get irritable. I get hangry. But I’ve discovered that just one good meal can change everything. Take children for instance. When babies cry, it’s usually because they’re hungry or need a nap.

The same is true when it comes to reading God’s Word. The prophet Jeremiah said, “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies” (Jeremiah 15:16 NLT).

I started Harvest Christian Fellowship by teaching through the Bible, and we’re still doing that today because we know how important the Word of God is in peoples’ lives.

If you’re feeling down and listless spiritually, you need the Word of God. That’s why you’re feeling lethargic. That’s why you’re feeling the way you do. Your life has been flooded with fear and anxiety because you’ve forgotten what the Bible says.

We need to spend time in the Word of God every day. And as we open God’s Word, it will speak to our hearts.
